Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) for adult mental health in Alpharetta.

PHP is structured, daytime mental health treatment for adults who need more support than weekly therapy can offer — without an overnight hospital stay.

Answer · What is a mental health PHP?

A mental health Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is a structured, daytime outpatient treatment program for adults whose symptoms — like severe depression, anxiety, trauma responses, or mood instability — require significant clinical support but do not require an overnight stay. PHP typically runs about 6 hours per day, 5 days per week, and includes group therapy, individual therapy, psychiatric care, and family involvement.

Who PHP is for

PHP is the right fit when:

  • Weekly therapy isn't keeping up with what you're managing
  • You've recently been hospitalized and need a structured next step
  • Symptoms are interfering with sleep, work, school, or relationships
  • You're safe to live at home but not safe to wait
  • A clinician has recommended a higher level of care

PHP is not the right fit when someone needs 24-hour supervision, medical detox, or is in imminent crisis. In those situations, we'll help connect you to the appropriate level of care.

How PHP differs from inpatient care

PHP is not a hospital. You sleep at home, keep your phone, and stay connected to family. It's designed for people who need daily clinical structure but who are safe and supported in their living environment.

How PHP supports step-down care

If you've recently been hospitalized or completed residential treatment, PHP is often the next clinical step. We coordinate directly with your inpatient team — with your consent — to make sure nothing in your treatment plan gets dropped in the handoff.

Questions about PHP at Mendwell

No. PHP is not a hospital. Patients in PHP sleep at home, keep their phones, and stay connected to family. PHP provides hospital-level structure during the day — usually 9 AM to 3 PM — without an overnight stay. PHP is appropriate when someone needs significant daily clinical support but is safe to live at home.

PHP is typically a full daytime program — 9 AM to 3 PM, five days per week — so most patients take short-term leave or use FMLA during PHP. PHP usually lasts 2–4 weeks, and many patients then step down into IOP, where returning to work is part of the plan.

Many commercial insurance plans, including most PPO plans, provide coverage for medically necessary mental health PHP services. Actual coverage depends on your specific plan, deductible, copay or coinsurance, medical necessity, and whether the program is in or out of network. Mendwell can help verify your benefits before you start care.

Most patients complete an admissions call within the first business day and an assessment within 1–3 business days. PHP admissions typically begin within 3–7 days of the first call, depending on assessment results and insurance verification.

With your written consent, yes. Mendwell's family work includes education about the condition, support around how to be helpful, family communication sessions when clinically appropriate, and realistic discharge planning. Without consent, we cannot share information — this is a HIPAA requirement and a core part of patient trust.
