Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for adult mental health in Alpharetta.
IOP is structured, evidence-based mental health treatment that fits around work, school, and family life — without putting either on hold.
A mental health Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is a structured outpatient treatment program for adults whose symptoms need more than weekly therapy but who can safely live at home and continue working or attending school. IOP typically runs 3 hours per session, 3–5 days per week, with a mix of group therapy, individual therapy, and psychiatric support.
Who IOP is for
- Weekly therapy isn't enough, but daily PHP would be too disruptive
- You're stepping down from PHP, residential, or inpatient care
- You need a real treatment plan, not just talk therapy
- You can work, parent, or study with the right structure around you
Morning and evening tracks
We run two IOP tracks so the program fits your life:
| Track | Days | Hours |
|---|---|---|
| Morning IOP | Mon · Tue · Thu | 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM |
| Evening IOP — for working adults | Mon · Wed · Thu | 5:30 PM – 8:30 PM |
Some patients attend a hybrid (in-person + telehealth) when work travel or caregiving makes full in-person attendance difficult. We'll talk through what makes clinical sense during your assessment.
How IOP is different from weekly therapy
Weekly therapy is one hour, one clinician, one modality. IOP is 9+ hours per week across a team — group therapy, individual sessions, psychiatric care, family involvement, and a written treatment plan with measurable goals. Most importantly, IOP gives you something weekly therapy can't: a structured peer cohort of adults working on similar things at the same time.
How IOP differs from PHP
| PHP | IOP | |
|---|---|---|
| Hours per week | ~30 | 9–12 |
| Days per week | 5 | 3 |
| Schedule | Daytime only | Morning or evening |
| Typical use | Step-down from hospital or stabilization | Step-down from PHP, or alternative to weekly therapy |
| Compatible with full-time work | Usually no | Usually yes |
What treatment includes
- Group therapy grounded in CBT, DBT, and trauma-informed approaches
- One individual therapy session per week
- Psychiatric care and medication management when appropriate
- Family education and communication, with your consent
- Discharge planning and step-down to weekly outpatient care
How long IOP lasts
Most patients are in IOP for 8–12 weeks. The length depends on your clinical goals, how you respond to treatment, and your support system outside of program hours.
Can I keep working during IOP?
Most patients in IOP continue to work or attend school. The evening track exists specifically for working adults. We can also provide documentation for short-term FMLA or employer accommodations when appropriate.

Questions about IOP at Mendwell
PHP is more intensive than IOP. PHP runs about 30 hours per week across 5 full days, while IOP runs 9–15 hours per week across 3–5 shorter sessions. PHP is typically used for stabilization or step-down from inpatient care. IOP is typically used for step-down from PHP, or for adults who need more than weekly therapy but can continue working or attending school.
Most patients in IOP continue to work or attend school. Mendwell offers a morning track and an evening track specifically to accommodate working adults. We can also provide documentation for short-term FMLA or employer accommodations when clinically appropriate.
Many commercial insurance plans, including most PPO plans, provide coverage for medically necessary mental health IOP services. Actual coverage depends on your specific plan, deductible, copay or coinsurance, medical necessity, and whether the program is in or out of network. Mendwell's admissions team can help verify your benefits before you start.
Mendwell offers limited telehealth IOP sessions for established patients who occasionally can't attend in person. We start treatment in person whenever clinically appropriate. Telehealth services are available only to Georgia residents and are subject to clinical appropriateness and licensure rules.
IOP is generally appropriate if weekly therapy isn't producing enough progress but daily PHP would be too disruptive, if you're stepping down from PHP or inpatient care, or if you can continue work or school with the right structure around you. A confidential assessment with a licensed clinician is the most reliable way to confirm fit.
